World first in Saas-Fee

17 December 2014

The world's first snow groomer with the latest TIER 4 final engine technology is – naturally – a PistenBully. Saastal Bergbahnen AG, Suisse, was the first customer to purchase a PistenBully 400 ParkPro and a PistenBully 400W. On December, 16th 2014, the official handing over of the vehicles took place at a height of 3,500 meters.

Kässbohrer Geländefahrzeug AG is the first snow groomer manufacturer to introduce the new Tier 4 final exhaust standard, emphasising once again its enduring leadership in innovation. The emission values stipulated by the Tier 4 final exhaust standard are achieved by combining a diesel-oxidation catalytic converter with the SCR catalytic converter. This process drastically reduces the NOX levels and particles in the exhaust gas. 23 vehicles can now be operated with the same volume that would only have been permitted for 1 vehicle under the Tier 1 regulations.

New in Europe is the PistenBully 400 ParkPro which has been developed in close collaboration with park shapers from all over the world for the creation of fun parks, boarder and ski cross slopes, and fun slopes. The 400 ParkPro is designed for more creativity and perfection. Its Switchblade2 is the broadest and best park blade in the world and features many details to make work in the park easier. The Switchblade2 is easy to operate using the joystick. Its range of movement is a massive 137° thanks to the optimised push frame. The newly developed vertical cutting edge facilitates razor-sharp and right-angled side walls, while the drawing bar allows for precise kickers smoothed to perfection. And those are just a few features of the 400 ParkPro.

Saas-Fee in den Saastal mountains in Wallis also has a long history of sustainability and a committed green approach to business. Accordingly, the firm of Saastal Bergbahnen AG quickly realised it needed to be first when the ultimate clean engine technology came onto the market.

Indeed, it suits the character of the ski region around Saas-Fee very well: the town has long been setting milestones in eco-friendly business with several pioneering projects. Saas-Fee was, for example a pilot municipality in the “Alliance in the Alps” project, signing up in 1996. This is a partnership of over 200 Alpine towns, which strive to implement the aims of the Alpine Convention for the Sustainable Development of the Alps in specific schemes. The resort has been car-free since 1951 and has been a member of the Swiss Association of Car-Free Tourist Resorts (GAST) ever since. In June 2002, Saas-Fee was honoured with the coveted European Energy Award® (“Energiestadt”).  Moreover, Saas-Fee has taken up the fight against carcinogenic fine dust particulates and has equipped the 250 wood-fired systems in the town with particle filters. This has made the “Pearl of the Alps” the first community free of fine dust particulates in the European Alps.

Investment in the innovative low-emission engine technology from Kässbohrer emphasises this commitment on the slopes too. The ski resorts have been relying 100 % on PistenBully for many years. This was rewarded this year with 3rd place out of the Best European Ski Resorts 2014 (

The official handover on December, 16th, 2014 not only saw the presentation of the symbolic key for a new era in exhaust technology, but also – with a voucher for the planting of new trees – emphasised the joint obligation to take an eco-friendly approach to nature.
