For 21 years, he has witnessed the evolution of slope grooming, experienced several generations of PistenBully vehicles, and today is responsible for fleet maintenance, surveying, GIS applications, and the resort’s entire SnowSat system. What was originally introduced primarily as a snow depth measurement system has gradually evolved into a central platform supporting the entire operational workflow. For Hofer, precise snow depth measurement remains the foundation of efficient snow management. It provides transparency regarding available snow reserves and makes it possible to deploy snow exactly where it is needed. 

Equally important is the support SnowSat provides to operators during challenging weather conditions. In snowfall, fog, or darkness, the system helps maintain orientation, stay within slope boundaries, and identify potential hazards early. 

“In the past, there were occasional dangerous situations. Today, they are almost completely eliminated.” 

However, the benefits extend far beyond navigation. Thanks to real-time data, operators and supervisors can see at any moment which areas have already been groomed and where assistance may be required. This transparency regarding work progress simplifies team coordination and ensures resources are used efficiently. 

“You can see the progress: How far along is your colleague? Should I help him? Do I need to help him? This real-time information greatly supports our daily operations.” 

In addition, the team uses the platform to analyze snow development, monitor data transmission, and evaluate machine and operational data. For Hofer, SnowSat is no longer an isolated tool but an integral part of daily operations, from the first PistenBully run in the evening to the final analysis the next morning.

According to Matthias Hofer, SnowSat’s greatest strength lies in the combination of all these individual benefits. At the same time, Hofer emphasizes that digital solutions should never be viewed as finished products. New requirements emerging from day-to-day operations constantly create opportunities for further development, and Kässbohrer works closely with users to continuously refine the system.

Looking ahead, Hofer no longer sees SnowSat merely as a measurement and documentation system. In his view, the platform is increasingly becoming a tool for training, planning, and decision support. He sees particularly strong potential in the onboarding of new operators. Even before their first shift, they can gain a theoretical understanding of how snow should be distributed, which areas require special attention, and how terrain and snow cover change throughout the season. “SnowSat already supports us in this area today. In the future, it can play an even greater role in knowledge transfer and operator training.” 

For Hofer, it is clear that digitalization in slope grooming is far from reaching its full potential. The future lies in even more closely connected systems, intelligent assistance functions, and enhanced support for the people who work on and around the slopes every day.
