First in the East

24 January 2017

The 4th and 5th of January 2017 were marked by back to back ceremonies commemorating the first two diesel-electric PistenBully 600E+ snow groomers to operate in the eastern United States.  Josh Nelson, New England Regional Sales Representative had the honor of passing a symbolic key over to resort owners, Brian and Tyler Fairbank who were accompanied by the rest of their teams at both Cranmore and Bromley Resorts.

The Fairbank Group, owned and managed by the father son team (Brian and Tyler Fairbank respectively), is not new to implementing sustainable technology at their resorts.  The Fairbank Group is comprised of Jiminy Peak (VT), Cranmore (NH) and Bromley (VT) resorts.  Currently, over 90% of Jiminy Peak Resort's electrical power comes from local renewable sources.  Jiminy Peak is home to a wind turbine, a 2.3 megawatt solar project, a cogeneration system and as of recent, PistenBully's fleet and snow depth measurement technology, SNOWsat.  It seemed logical for Jiminy Peak's sister resorts, Cranmore and Bromley to follow suit and invest in sustainable grooming technolgy.

Fuel consumption in the 600E+ varies by operator, but on average, resort owners of the machine have reported around a 20% decrease.  There is also a significant decrease in CO2, NOX emissions and sound.  Besides being more economically and environmentally friendly, the 600E+ boasts more power and torque than the average PistenBully 600.  Bromley groomer, Kevin Polhemus reports back on his experience with the 600E+: "This thing will blow your mind, it's got unbelievable torque.  It's just so much fun to drive."  Cranmore Mountain Manager, John Mersereau commented that "The 600E+ has been a great addition to our fleet and has performed above our expectations.  It's playing a big par in advancing the quality of our snow conditions."

It is no surprise that Cranmore and Bromley are the first resorts in the East to operate the 600E+, but it is commendable.  As the Fairbank Group continues to take a strong leadership role for green initiative in the ski industry, PistenBully looks forward to its feedback and continued strong relationship.
